It will be a while before the full extent of the toll on human life and livelihoods is known from the Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm that left devastation in its wake across many US states from Florida through Virginia. Although several tropical storms have traveled through southern Appalachia over the past 150 years, global warming is making hurricanes stronger and more intense. Record high temperature in the Gulf waters and in air temperature, allows these hurricanes to hold more moisture resulting in more rainfall.
