Working from ‘anywhere’ is possible—but not sustainable

An article in Fast Company argues that while technology has made working from anywhere possible, breakthroughs in innovation are still more likely to occur in larger cities, which offer larger and more diverse populations, more varied thinking, and access to cultural and academic institutions. While recent news reports have highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many workers seeking to leave urban areas, this research suggests that companies should continue to take into consideration the benefits of being in an area large enough to foster innovation and creativity.

"Businesses and municipal leaders alike need to not assume that people should—or will want to—work anywhere post-COVID-19. Location still matters, especially to create and benefit from an ecosystem of innovation," according to the article.
